Understanding Walking Pace

Pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance. A faster pace means a shorter time per kilometre or mile.

  • Slow stroll — above 20 min/km (above 32 min/mile)
  • Casual walk — 15–20 min/km (24–32 min/mile)
  • Moderate walk — 12–15 min/km (19–24 min/mile)
  • Brisk walk — 9–12 min/km (15–19 min/mile)
  • Power walk — below 9 min/km (below 15 min/mile)

Step cadence (steps per minute) is estimated based on typical stride lengths at each speed. Most walkers take 100–130 steps per minute.

What Is a Good Walking Pace?

A good walking pace for general fitness is considered brisk, typically around 5–6 km/h (3–3.7 mph), or roughly 12–15 minutes per kilometre. This pace elevates your heart rate enough to provide cardiovascular benefits while remaining sustainable for long walks.

Research from the UK Biobank study suggests that a habitual walking pace above 5.6 km/h (3.5 mph) is associated with a significantly lower risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. Even increasing your pace from slow to moderate can meaningfully improve health outcomes.
